Beyond the Birth Fee

Beyond the Birth Fee: More Ways Doulas Earn

Two women working at a table together.

Birth support is the heart of the work, but it does not have to be the only way you get paid. Some of these options use skills you already have, and some fit around an on-call schedule. Pick the one that suits your life now.

Teach

Teaching uses what you already know and happens on a schedule you set. Why doulas should consider childbirth education training covers the benefits, from meeting recertification requirements to adding value to your doula packages. Why childbirth education makes your doula work easier explains why my own client contract asks families to take a class, and how prepared families let you focus on personalized support.

You can also take your knowledge to the workplace. Lunch-and-learn wellness programs shows how to offer short sessions for employers, which topics they want, and where HSA and FSA money fits. For one-on-one teaching without the pager, birth planning sessions turn a prenatal skill into its own paid service.

Earn from what you already recommend

You already tell clients which tools and books you trust. How to use affiliates without feeling salesy covers how to earn a commission on what you would recommend anyway, and the ethics of doing it.

Trade instead of paying

Not every trade has to involve cash. Bartering for doulas shows how to trade your doula services for something of equal value to you.

Find the time to do it

New income needs a little time to build. Turn minutes into money with the Money Moments method helps you spend short pockets of time on the work that actually brings in money. And if you have not looked past your clients for funding yet, someone should pay you looks at hospitals, community organizations, and public health programs.

If you want help choosing

The right add-on depends on your market and your life. The Doula Mentoring Collective gives you live weekly support and a group of working doulas for $47 a month.
