Doula Pricing Guide: Set Your Fee, Get Paid, and Raise It

A doula with her hand on a pregnant client's belly.

Your fee has to cover more than the birth. It pays for the weeks on call, the prenatal visits, the gas, and the childcare, and it has to keep you in this work for years. This guide takes pricing in the order most doulas run into it: finding a starting number, building packages around it, collecting the money, and raising it as you grow.

Find your starting number

Most doulas start by copying a number from a Facebook group or a directory and taking a little off so it feels safe. The doula pricing trap explains why that number usually belongs to someone whose costs and goals look nothing like yours, and what to anchor to instead. If you are new, why $400 isn’t enough for your first birth covers what a first fee has to pay for. For the wider view, how much doulas make lays out income by experience, setting, and region.

Two free tools will give you a number to test:

  • The Doula Package Builder. Pick your state, birth or postpartum work or both, and how long you have been practicing. It gives you a starting fee anchored to your state’s average, plus a line for saying it out loud.
  • The Doula Fee Calculator. Enter any two of your fee, your clients per month, and your monthly total, and it fills in the third. That number is gross income, before taxes, mileage, childcare, and backup costs, so treat it as the top line, not your take-home pay.

Build your packages

Once you have a number, decide how families will see it. Creative doula pricing packages walks through ten ways to set them up, from two simple tiers to add-ons and a sliding scale. Then decide whether the price goes on your website. Should you list your doula prices online? gives you both sides and a 30-day test to run in your own market.

Collect what you are owed

A fee only counts once it is in your account. Start with how doulas accept payments online, including why personal Venmo and Cash App put you at risk. If families ask to spread the cost out, compare running your own installments with requiring full payment, and see what buy now, pay later services like Afterpay and Klarna would cost you. And before you ever need it, read how to handle a chargeback.

Raise it as you grow

Your first fee is not your forever fee. Know when it’s time to raise your doula rate covers the signs, like a full calendar and costs that keep creeping up. When a past client comes back after your fee has gone up, pricing for repeat doula clients gives you four policies to choose from, with sample wording.

Say it out loud

Knowing your fee and saying it to a family across the table are two different skills. My doula consultation guide covers that conversation, including the money part.

If you want help with your number

My Confidently Set Your Doula Fee class is $41. Members of the Doula Mentoring Collective also get the full version of the package builder, which adds package tiers, add-ons, and a monthly and yearly income projection. Membership is $47 a month.
