Every year, the first week of August is celebrated as World Breastfeeding Week. It’s a time for families and professionals to come together and celebrate breastfeeding. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to educate and grow your business. Here are seven straightforward ways you can use this special week to promote your doula services.

1. Create a Lead Magnet or Freebie

Develop a lead magnet or freebie that provides valuable information on local resources or breastfeeding tips. This could be a downloadable PDF that includes your curated list of local breastfeeding support groups, lactation consultants, or practical breastfeeding advice. Not only does this offer value to your audience, but it also showcases your extensive local resource list and expertise.

2. Engage on Social Media

Use social media to reach a broader audience. Consider doing a live session where you talk about local breastfeeding resources or share tips as a doula. Creating carousel posts featuring local resources, tips for new parents, or highlighting breastfeeding benefits can also engage your audience effectively. These activities can increase your visibility and establish you as a knowledgeable and supportive professional in the breastfeeding community.

3. Write Thank You Notes

Consider sending thank you notes to all the lactation professionals you’ve worked with over the past year. This is a great time to reconnect and show your appreciation for their services. For an extra touch, include a $5 gift card to a local coffee shop. This small gesture can go a long way in strengthening your professional relationships.

4. Donate a Lactation Book

Donate a breastfeeding book to a local mom’s group or organization that supports new families. Even if you can’t include a gift plate inside the book, a letter expressing your appreciation and desire to support their goals can be impactful. For example, you might donate a copy of “Medications and Mother’s Milk” by Dr. Thomas Hale to a local pediatrician building their breastfeeding practice.

5. Host an Educational Class

Consider hosting a short educational class online or at a local bookstore or community center. Topics could include the benefits of breastfeeding, tips for working while breastfeeding, or how to choose the right pump. These mini-classes, even if just 20-30 minutes long, provide valuable information and an opportunity to share your business cards.

6. Advocate for Breastfeeding Support

Take a proactive approach by writing letters to your state or local legislators about important issues like breastfeeding support, breastfeeding/pumping rooms for employees, and family leave policies. Advocacy can make a significant difference and positions you as a dedicated and knowledgeable professional.

7. Send a Goodie Basket

Send a goodie basket to a local breastfeeding center or a meeting of La Leche League leaders. While sweet treats are always appreciated, a tray of bagels or another healthy option can also be a hit. This gesture shows your gratitude and helps keep you top of mind in the breastfeeding community.

The list of ideas can go on and on. The goal is to choose one or two actions you feel confident you can accomplish and make them happen. These actions could become yearly traditions or integral parts of your business strategy. Start planning in July so you’re ready to celebrate the first week of August.
